Day 17 features Koji Kami, Curator, Nara Prison Museum, who presents the significance of the prison as a unique facility from the distinct perspectives of Block A, Block B, and Block C. Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Koji Kami, Curator, Nara Prison Museum Koji Kami formerly worked at Nomura Co., Ltd., the company responsible for the exhibition design of the Nara Prison Museum. As a planner, he has worked on numerous exhibitions for historical museums specializing in archaeology, history, and folklore, as well as museums themed around human rights. He was appointed as a curator of the Nara Prison Museum in April 2025. From April onwards, he plans to conduct Spot Guides to introduce archival materials and facility spaces that are not usually open to the public.

Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Hiroki Hasegawa, Studio Onsite Studio Onsite is a firm specializing in landscape design, focusing on spatial design for public facilities such as museums and libraries, commercial facilities, and the planning and design of parks. Their portfolio includes landscape designs for HOSHINOYA Karuizawa, HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island, HOSHINOYA Okinawa, and various other HOSHINOYA and KAI properties. While teaching as a professor at Musashino Art University, Mr. Hasegawa has authored numerous books, including Touching the Landscape: Thinking Methods of Landscape Design.

Based on the philosophy that art itself is a prayer, they continue to present works in various locations and through various methods. Dissolving Prayer into the Sea was produced between 2022 and 2023.

Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Satoshi Ishimoto, Site Manager at Toda Corporation During the construction period of just under two and a half years, Satoshi Ishimoto was stationed almost constantly at the site as the manager. (Currently, having completed the renovation, he is working on a new mission as the manager of a different site.) "I am deeply grateful for the active participation of the Ministry of Justice, the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Nara City, and various preservation committees and designers. As the site supervisor, it was a major challenge to harmonize the diverse opinions and visions of so many stakeholders into a single cohesive form," says Mr. Ishimoto.

Over the past seven years, as a project manager, he has handled a wide range of duties, including negotiations with the Ministry of Justice, the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and construction companies, conducting hearings with experts on exhibition content, and holding meetings with Art Director Taku Satoh. With the opening approaching, Ishii says, I feel like Beethoven having just finished composing his Ninth Symphony after starting from the First.

Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Kennin Kudo, Hannya-ji Temple @hannyaji_temple Hannya-ji Temple became known as the "Flower Temple" about half a century ago. It is especially popular from late September to October when 150,000 cosmos flowers bloom, earning it the nickname "Cosmos Temple." Recently, its June hydrangeas have also become a sensation on social media. The Chief Abbot, Kennin Kudo, has a unique background as a former professional boxer with the ring name "Hannyaji Kennin." Since succeeding to the temple, he has served the Buddha while also actively sharing updates on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Day 10 features Ryo Murase, who was involved in the preservation and utilization project of the former Nara Prison from a national perspective as a Ministry of Justice official. Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Ryo Murase, Ministry of Justice After being recruited by the Correction Bureau of the Ministry of Justice and working at prisons, Ryo Murase served as the Assistant Officer of the Public-Private Partnership Planning Section, Adult Correction Division, Correction Bureau, from April 2024 to March 2026, where he was in charge of the former Nara Prison preservation and utilization project. By utilizing the expertise of private sectors, we have achieved innovative exhibits that are not bound by conventional ideas, says Murase.

Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Yoshinari Nishio, Artist 　@nishioyoshinari Professor at the Department of Intermedia Art, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Focusing primarily on clothing, he examines the relationship between the act of dressing and communication. He develops art projects both in Japan and overseas through collaboration with citizens and students, putting into practice the role of art in society. While serving as an associate professor at Nara Prefectural University, he was struck by the overwhelming presence of Nara Prison. While exploring ways for art to bridge the gap between the inside and outside of the prison, he was invited by the Nara Prison Museum to create an art installation and launched the Sewing Voices art project.

After retiring, he has been involved as a guide for Nara Prison tours organized by travel agencies, sharing his firsthand experiences with visitors. At Nara Juvenile Prison, approximately 200 staff members were stationed on-site, with about 100 of them dedicated to security and guard duties.

NOMURA Co., Ltd. handles the planning, design, and construction of diverse spaces including museums and commercial facilities. As a spatial designer, Ryo Onishi has been involved in numerous projects, including the exhibition design for EARTH MART at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. At the Nara Prison Museum, he served as the spatial design project leader.

In addition to the design, supervision, and seismic reinforcement involved in the preservation and repair of Important Cultural Properties, the firm provides comprehensive consulting to pass these treasures on to the next generation. In the restoration of Nara Prison, Mitsuhiro Nomura served not only as a supervisor but also as a coordinator between the operator, the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the contractors.

Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑 Kiyoshi Kusumi, Art Editor / Critic After serving as the editor-in-chief of Bijutsu Techo, he is currently a professor at the Faculty of System Design, Tokyo Metropolitan University. He writes criticism across a wide range of genres including art, design, music, and media, and has been involved in planning exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. At the Nara Prison Museum, he was responsible for artist selection and exhibition curation for “Art and Incarceration” in Block C.

Day 3 features Manabu Nakajima, Professor at the Faculty of Human Cultures at Fukuyama University, who supervised the historical and legal aspects of the exhibition. Link in bio! 🔗 @nara_prison_musum 🔑Manabu Nakajima Professor at the Faculty of Human Cultures at Fukuyama University After completing the doctoral coursework at the Graduate School of Law, Kyushu University, he earned a Ph.D. in Law. He joined the Ministry of Justice in 1988. He served as the Director of the Mine Rehabilitation Support Center and the Director of the Fukuoka Juvenile Training School, before retiring as the Director of the Sapporo Correction Headquarters. Currently a professor at Fukuyama University teaching criminal policy and criminology, he continues to research and present on the social reintegration of inmates and juvenile delinquents. At the Nara Prison Museum, he supervised the historical and legal aspects of the exhibition based on his extensive knowledge and practical experience.

At the farm’s café-restaurant, "Ichizu," visitors can enjoy fresh pasteurized milk, signature milk cream croquettes, and decadent parfaits. The farm is open to the public daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It’s a pleasant 5-minute walk from the Nara Prison Museum—the perfect spot to visit after your museum tour! 🍦🐄

Link in bio! 🔗 🔑Taku Satoh　Graphic Designer / Art Director A graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, Taku Satoh is the creative force behind iconic designs like "LOTTE XYLITOL Gum" and "Meiji Oishii Gyunyu." Beyond branding and posters, he is the general director of NHK’s "Design Ah!," Director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, and President of Kyoto University of the Arts. For the Nara Prison Museum, his vision as Art Director extends from the exhibitions and logo to staff uniforms and museum shop merchandise.
